Planning the Perfect Picnic Checklist

Use this list to help plan your next picnic.

Food and Beverage

  • Pack casual foods like sandwiches and finger foods, preferably nothing that requires cutting. Avoid foods with mayonnaise, pack food in lightweight, re-sealable containers.
  • Ice pack, bagged Ice, coolers. For safety and health food needs to be stored at the proper temperatures. Bagged ice can be used in drinks, freezer blocks are easy and economical plus they last a long time.  Using insulated bags and coolers will help keep things cold longer.
  • Bring an assortment of drinks for kids and adults. Make sure to have water or a lemonade if it’s hot out.  Pack some summer wine in a nice carrier and non-breakable glasses for a romantic picnic.
  • Use mini jars (or those packets you’ve been collecting), plastic jars are the easiest to transport.
  • Salt and Pepper. Let everyone season up their food to their tastes, there are a lot of salt and pepper shakers on the market perfect for packing.

Tableware

  • Cups and plates. Plastic or disposable plates aare easiest to pack. There are many ecofriendly disposable plates on the market. If it’s a romantic picnic for two, consider packing the real deal!
  • Utensil take up little space so skip the disposables and bring reusable one. Make sure to bring along serving utensil if need be.
  • Cutting board and knife. Planning a meat and cheese platter or need to cut up fruit or sandwiches? Bring a small plastic or bamboo board along. Make sure to have a knife cover for safe transporting.
  • Corkscrew or bottle opener. Depending on the type of beverage you bring you may need to bring one or both.
  • Cloth napkins are extra handy on a picnic, no need to worry about disposing of them, they clean up spills or if you get really hot, plunge them into icy waters (like the lake or river), roll them up and wrap around your neck to stay cool.

Clean-up

  • Trash bags. Leave no trace, make sure if there isn’t a garbage nearby that you leave with everything you brought in.
  • Moist towelettes and/or hand sanitizer. Picnics don’t always happen in an area with running water or facilities, be prepared with some sanitizer or moist towelettes.
  • Paper towels. Paper towels can run double duty, use for clean-up and in place of napkins.

Miscellaneous

  • Should be big enough for everyone to sit on and for the food it can be used as a tablecloth if there are benches available.
  • Tote, backpack, picnic basket. Take advantage of all the cute picnicking items available, just make sure it’s the appropriate size.
  • Coolers and crates. For families are larger get togethers coolers may be necessary, try to find one with wheels for easy transport from the car to the site. Store picnic accessories and food that doesn’t need to be cooled in crates.  Once emptied the crates can double as a seat (even better with a pillow on top).  Bring a dowel along and run it through the crate openings for a paper towel holder.
  • Planning a whole day? Bring a fold up awning (make sure you have steaks or weights to secure from the Montana winds).

Décor

  • Going all out? Bring flameless candles and place in mason jars for attractive lighting. Or bring along some solar string lights.
  • Banners and Lanterns. Asian lanterns and banners can be hung from trees for a festive feel.
  • Pick a theme like tiki, Mexican, etc. plan the food to match the décor.
  • Fresh flowers always add a nice touch, use jars and bottles, put some on the tables or nag from an awning or trees. For an extra glow, drop in water proof lights.
  • Condiment and flatware holder. Re-purpose a 6 pack box into a holder for condiments and flatware. Put a bottle in one section with water for flowers for a special touch.
